City of Ripon
The picturesque City of Ripon is small as cities go with a population of around 17.000. It is actually a small market town in size but gets it’s designation of "city" due to the cathedral that sits at it's heart. It is a pleasant place with history to spare as it has been settled for over 1100 hundred years. The city is situated at the meeting place of the Ure and Skell rivers with winding, sometimes narrow streets. Many of the older houses show the architecture and building decoration of times gone by. The Market Place with it’s central obelisk is visible from most parts of the city. The obelisk was built in 1703 to replace an early Market Cross. The market place is surrounded by original Tudor styled buildings. One of the cities longest running traditions is that of the Wakeman which has remained unbroken for over 900 years. Every night at 9 o’clock, the Wakeman sounds is horn at the four corners of the obelisk. The Wakeman was originally the keeper of Law and order in Ripon and in days past lived in the Wakmans House. In addition to housing the weekly market, the market square is often a central focus of events through the year. Everything from fairs and the yearly St Wilfred’s Day parade to ringing in the new year. Ripon is also home to a well regarded race course that hosts some highly enjoyable horse racing throughout the summer.
